SEVEN

Well, here I was. Again. I could complain, but seeing how I wasn’t on the receiving end of all the questions, I really didn’t want to tempt the Fates. It also didn’t help that all the police officers knew me by sight, and didn’t bother questioning why I was back yet again. Then again, it could have something to do with the fact I had Sherlock and Watson with me. I’ve said on numerous occasions that my two dogs will always be more famous than me.

“Welcome back,” the girl manning the front desk said. “Just head on back. I know Detective Samuelson is already in the interrogation room with your suspect.”

“Number two?” I asked, as I let the dogs guide me around the counter and toward the hallway.

“Yes.”

“Is there an interrogation room number one?”

The woman nodded. “There is, but it’s used for storage.”

“Ah. Guys? Shake a paw, would you? I don’t want to miss anything.”

We navigated our way through the back hallway, which deposited us into the heart of the station. Several rows of desks were laid out, and a quick glance confirmed nearly half were occupied. Most of the cops had something nice to say to the corgis as they passed. However, there were always a few who looked down their noses at the dogs. Strange behavior, if you ask me. After all, we were on the same team. Then again, it must be a bitter pill to swallow when a pair of adorable dogs manage to solve more cases than the entire police force combined.

We had just passed Officer Jones’ desk when the dogs pulled me to a stop. As one, they turned to look right. An officer I wasn’t familiar with was sitting at one of the desks, poring over a report. The corgis pulled me up to the officer’s workspace and promptly sat.

“Not everyone has treats for you two,” I reminded the dogs.

The young officer looked up. He was in his early twenties, had short brown hair, and wore thin wire-framed glasses. He quickly rose to his feet and held out a hand.

“Good evening, sir. Officer Mason Riley. Would you get a load of that! Corgis! Wait. Are those two Sherlock and Watson?”

“They are,” I confirmed. I really wasn’t paying too much attention to the policeman. I was, instead, focused on trying to figure out why the dogs had dragged me over here. And, both dogs sat, which meant there was something here I was supposed to see, but what?

“Of course! That means you’re Zack Anderson, aren’t you? I’ve heard so much about you!”

“Good things I hope,” I said, smiling. “It’s good to meet you, Mason. I don’t think I’ve seen you before. Have you been here long?”

“This is my first week here,” the officer proudly proclaimed. “It’s why I’m working the late shift. I started last Monday. I was working at Klamath Falls, but my wife pushed me to apply here when a position opened up. We have family here.”

He turned to his desk and picked up a photograph of a smiling young woman holding a squirming boy of about two.
